Tub to Shower Conversion: Where Have All the Bathtubs Gone?

Why a tub to shower conversion is now common in master bathroom remodels: space, time, water use and style, and whether a shower feels as luxurious.

A Bathroom Remodeling Trend for Those with No Interest in Bathing

If we went back in time and showed the title of this blog to our grandparents when they were young, they might have been afraid that future generations would hold a general disinterest in personal hygiene. Thankfully that’s not the case… The reality, however, is that there has been a major shift in recent bathroom remodeling trends that has left the tub out in the cold. In many remodels, the old tub now gives way to a tub to shower conversion. And, to be more specific, this shift has taken place primarily in the master bathroom.

What Is a Master Bathroom?

The term is used all the time, but it’s important to keep in mind exactly what this particular space is and offers. Unlike the ½ bath (powder room) or full bath, the master bathroom is typically private and directly connected to the master bedroom, creating an en suite.

Far more than just a place to brush your teeth before bed, master bathrooms are more and more becoming a refuge. Luxury items are finding their way in too, making the relaxation and amenities of a spa just a door away.

Why Replace Your Tub with a Larger Shower?

It used to be that most master bathrooms had a jacuzzi or whirlpool tub included as the icing on the en suite cake. After all, who doesn’t love a relaxing soak after a long day?

Today, however, these big tubs are being replaced with larger showers.

Why? Great question! Let’s take a look at a few of the common reasons below:

  • Space – You certainly can choose a large, walk-in shower with a massive footprint, but you don’t have to. Often a shower takes up much less space than a jacuzzi tub.
  • Time – A tub needs to fill, and relaxing and soaking is a time commitment. A shower can simply be stepped into whenever you’re ready.
  • Water Usage – Obviously a long, lingering shower can use a lot of water, but most often it requires less than it does to fill a massive tub.
  • Style – From stunning stone to custom tile, the options for your shower’s material and design are plentiful.
  • Safety – Especially if age or mobility is a concern, a zero-threshold, walk-in shower is a much safer design than a typical tub/shower that you need to step into.

But Is a Shower as Luxurious as a Tub?

Oh yes… Stepping far past the standard shower head jutting out at a 45-degree angle, features and specialized designs have taken off in recent years. From sitting in the lap of luxury to feeling like you just discovered a waterfall in a rainforest cave, the opportunities are endless. Here are just a few of the features you can choose:

  • Rainfall shower heads
  • His/her designs
  • Steam showers
  • Multiple heads
  • Seating
  • Remote-controlled settings
  • Custom lighting
  • Unlimited potential for stylistic ambience
